[Women's Cross Country] Runner-up finish by Stempien paces Cross Country at home opener

Laurinburg, NC- The St. Andrews University Cross Country team hosted their first home meet in a few years on Friday evening as they hosted 3 colleges plus a few high schools and middle schools.

SAU's sophomore Kaitlyn Stempien (Raleigh, NC) paced the Lady Knights as she finished in 2nd place in the 5K race (3.2 miles) with a time of 21:06 finishing just 3 seconds shy of first place's Natali Olveda of Salem College (NC).

Other Lady Knight placers were freshman Morgan Tedder (Rockingham, NC) who came in 11th with a time of 22:43 while fellow freshman Kara Thornton came in right behind her with a time of 22:48 in 12th. Freshman Ashley Barrera then came in 16th with a time of 23:01 while senior captain Karlee Arnold finished in 20th at 23:38 to place 5th on the team.

Unfortunately, the top 5 Lady Knights could only muster a third place overall team finish with 60 points finishing behind runner-up Salem with 49 and team champion Meredith College (NC) with 33 points. Meredith won with 5 runners placing in the top 9. Columbia International (SC) then rounded out the teams as they came in last with 83 points.

Other Lady Knights that finished were freshman Rebecca Yuswak in 31st with a time of 25:34 and sophomore Emily Scott who came in 42nd at 27:58.

The cross country team is next in action this Friday evening as they travel to Wilmington, NC to compete in the Adidas Seahawk Invitational.
